Applied Theatre with Division 13
Our student teacher, Ms. Jen Dickson, introduced division 13 to the concept of Applied Theatre before the break! Student's researched the WUSC (World University Service of Canada) program, examined how they felt about how we value our right to education in Canada, and created plays that reflected their feelings on the subject. In addition to researching and producing original work that reflected their personal views, students had the opportunity to explore and work in the production areas that interested them (i.e. writing, directing, acting, lighting, sound, costume, and back stage crew). The plays were performed for a group of grade 7 students (Division 9).

In 2013, WUSC along with its partners began implementing the Borderless Higher Education for Refugees (BHER) Project, a development initiative led by York University that aims to make university programs available to refugees and local host communities in the Dadaab region in eastern Kenya. With some
500, 000 refugees in Dadaab, attending university or accessing tertiary degree programs has been almost impossible for refugees and host communities. Only one percent benefit from international scholarships.

Special thanks to Mr. Ferrier, Miss. Hannah, Mr. Lemon, and Mrs. Wilkinson for sharing their middle school memories with Division 13. Congratulations to all of the Grade 8 students who worked so hard in the production areas that interested them (i.e. writing, directing, sound, lights, costume, acting, "extras" & crew) to bring these memories to life on the stage for their teachers.
It felt like we were just getting started, and then you all had to move on to your next exploratory.
You are missed! I hope you will stay inspired and find ways to get involved in theatre arts next year!!!

Improv and Storytelling

Some of Ms. Hall's favorite storytelling quotes:
"To be a person is to have a story to tell". ~ Isak Dinesen
"Their story, yours and mine -- it's what we all carry with us on this trip we take, and we owe it to each other to respect our stories and learn from them". ~ William Carlos Williams
"The destiny of the world is determined less by the battles that are lost and won than by the stories it loves and believes in". ~ Harold Goddard

FAREWELL THOUGHTS FOR DIVISION 15!
Wow! Division 15 produced an awesome set of stories for the stage! BRAVO team...you worked so hard on these. I think that if we'd had one more week to rehearse, we could have sold some tickets! Thank you for all that you taught me and for bringing so much great energy with you to class each week. I will miss you.

Field Trip Update!
![Picture](/uploads/2/4/8/5/24850341/1997462.jpg?366)
Division 15 had a really successful walking field trip to the Phoenix Theatre. The class as a whole had so many intelligent questions and behaved so respectfully that we were invited onto the thrust stage in the Chief Dan George theatre - the same stage where the production of "The Skin Of Our Teeth" was currently in performance. Students enjoyed the trip and seemed to learn a lot about all the hard work that goes into putting on a production. Division 15 also helped a group of applied theatre students understand what it is like to manage their online presence in grade eight. These students from UVic will be bringing in a drama workshop for Division 15 on Thursday, December 5th to help them continue to explore how they are representing themselves on the world wide web.

Thank you to special guest artist, founder of SNAFU DANCE THEATRE and friend, Ingrid Hansen, for visiting the Gr.7 and 8 Drama classes last Tuesday, November 12th. Students
discussed her recent puppet project at William Head prison where she worked with inmates as the director for their 2013 production. Ingrid's puppet workshop stretched our imaginations in weird and wonderful new ways!

Mask Scenes
![Picture](/uploads/2/4/8/5/24850341/2038999.jpg)
Division 15 explored the power of MASK. We invented and performed short mask scenes for each other, and discovered how they could be enriched by piano accompaniment and sound design. All assessments for these scenes have been shared with students.
